Recipe Swap Group #4
They had a wonderful time enjoying great food and interesting drinks at this month's early evening gathering. Our Theme was "Copycat Recipes" - which are recipes for dishes from popular restaurants. We had recipes from Farlow's, Pop's, Applebee's, Panera, Bonefish, California Pizza Kitchen, and Ted Montana's Grill! The food was outstanding and what a great time they all had! They are looking forward to getting together again in November.

Art on the Run
The final event for the Art on the Run Activity Group took place at Venice Locale in downtown Venice. They had a Resin Workshop conducted by owner and artist Alma Eason and they all created an Ocean Waves Resin Board. They all dove into the mesmerizing world of resin art, and learned the techniques of mixing resin, infusing colors, blowing the resin and working with glitter. Every board was unique and stunningly beautiful. The camaraderie and laughter that filled the room was delightful. Those who demonstrated expert skill helped and encouraged the others. Awesome work ladies!

Creative Crafts
They have been busy these last two months. In January, they painted faux stained glass panels. The ladies did an amazing job on the flower of their choice. These will look great with the Florida sun shining through the glass! In February, they prepared for Valentine's Day by creating macra-weaving wall hangings. This technique combines macrame knotting with weaving to create a project that pops with color and texture. Good job ladies!

Garden Club Workshop
At Garden Clubs February meeting Phyllis Parker demonstrated the art of making kokedama to the amazement of all who were in attendance. They learned that Phyllis’s family owned a florist shop while she was growing up. Twenty of us tried our hand at making one for ourselves at the workshops scheduled this week. We were all pretty successful at mimicking her products. A big thank you to Phyllis for sharing her expertise. Well done all!

Fort Myers Art Festival Trip
What a beautiful day they had in Fort Myers on February 3rd for the 2024 Art Fest on the streets of downtown Fort Myers, directly on the riverfront. The weather was perfect for exploring the countless exhibits of paintings, sculptures, glass works, ceramics and more from over 200 local, national and worldwide artists. We were so happy to see that the downtown area was completely restored following Hurricane Ian. The local restaurants were welcoming and delicious and gave us an opportunity to catch up with old friends and make new ones. The bus ride was full of chatter and laughter with most of returning home with a beautiful piece from the day!

Art on the Run
On January 15, 2024, The Art on the Run Activity Group spent an absolutely delightful day in nearby Sarasota. We started our Art Adventure at the Sarasota Art Museum. This contemporary museum is a local treasure and should not be missed. We were led on tours of three exhibits by knowledgeable docents who guided us through the major themes of the artists, the mediums and materials that were used and the influences that contributed to their work. After a lovely lunch at the museum’s Bistro restaurant, we boarded the Discover Sarasota Trolley to explore the Art of Architecture in the homes and buildings of Sarasota.

Juanita Valdez addresses her Caribbean identity (below) and introduces two recurrent aspects in her work: her Cuban roots and African ancestry. Valdez’s exhibit deals with three main topics that are not necessarily exclusive: “The History of Migration”, “Representation and Subjectivity”, and “Materiality”.
A third exhibit below is drawn from the Richard and Barbara Basch extensive collection of glass art and gives a glimpse into the dynamic world of international contemporary glass art of the late 20th and 21st centuries. It showcases a stunning range of glasswork styles from delicate figural sculptures to powerful abstract shapes.
Aboard the Discover Sarasota Trolley we explored the Art of Architecture in the homes and buildings of Sarasota. Our knowledgeable and entertaining docent described the distinct architectural styles - Mid-Century Modern, Art Deco, and Mediterranean Revival. We also learned of the influence of the Sarasota School of Architecture and the works of renowned architects Victor Lundy, Ralph Twitchell, Paul Rudloph, Guy Peterson and I.M. Pei.

Wine Tasting
Seventy members of the Wine Tasting group gathered recently at Hotel Venezia for a Wine Pairing Dinner. Chef Chris surpassed our expectations with the delicious winter menu he served, and Todd from Johnson Brothers was on hand to explain the wine choices for us. Several ladies were lucky enough to take home bottles of wine they had won in the draws throughout the evening. It was a delightful event, thoroughly enjoyed by everyone present! And some news hot off the press, we are excited to report that we will be back at Hotel Venezia on April 28th for a Wines Around the World Cocktail Party.
We are presently in the process of preparing for our next dinner on February 20th which will bring us back to Pelican Pointe Clubhouse and hope many of you can join us for that. The invitation will be coming out soon so we look forward to seeing you there.

PP Cyclers December Christmas 12-23
The PP Cyclers enjoyed a festive holiday party at the home of leader Diane Santoianni after a 25 mile morning ride around the Grand Palm community. After a yummy potluck lunch, the group viewed a video presentation of pictures of the group over the years and enjoyed the memories they brought back. Leader Beth Groebe was acknowledged for her 4 years of great rides; her creative routes and sometimes challenging pace will be missed. Then our 2023 Queen of the Road was honored -- Gina Sangmeister earned the title with an impressive 859 miles ridden with our group this year! We finished off the afternoon with a spirited white elephant gift exchange. A good time was had by all!

The Make a Holiday Mosaic Workshop was held on November 14th at the Piece by Piece Mosaic Art Studio on Nassau Street in Downtown Venice. This year we had both a morning and afternoon session in order to accommodate all who wanted to attend. Owner and Mosaic Artist, Christine Holmes, guided us through the process of choosing our pattern and glass and cutting and applying the glass to our forms. Each and every creation was truly beautiful and unique. Everyone who participated put their own spin on Christmas Trees, Santas, Snowmen, Star of David and Free Form Ornaments. The room was filled with smiles, laughter and encouragement from all involved. Many thanks to Christine for grouting our masterpieces and her expert guidance and encouragement. All of the masterpieces are pictured for your pleasure.

Beach Babes Sunset Happy Hour
It was another beautiful sunset over the Gulf of Mexico on November 9th when the Beach Babes along with husbands (whom we aptly named our Beach Bums!) met for Happy Hour at Sharkey’s Beach near the Venice Pier. Our group of about thirty enjoyed drinks, snacks, and good company while Mother Nature treated us to the beautiful sunset views. We even had a true “babe” in attendance as Kelly Gaffney’s adorable visiting grandson joined us for awhile. It was a lovely night and we’ll plan a repeat in the spring.

October Pinochle
Pinochle Players has resumed meeting in the Pelican Pointe Clubhouse Library on the first and third Friday of every month from 7 to 9 pm. They have welcomed many new members and are having a great time, whether they play with 4, 5, 6, or 7 at a table! When you play with more than one deck, the person winning the bid gets to ask for one card. The person who has that card, then becomes their partner. Since this changes with every hand, sometimes they wear hats to identify partners. Dan and Kay look great in their Pinochle hats! Join them for friendship, fun, and Pinochle!

PP Cyclers March 10th Siesta Beach Ride
After having to postpone the ride several times due to weather, the PPCyclers were finally able to do their ride to Siesta Key on March 10. While it's 44 miles round trip, this challenge ride is a favorite of many of our members. An early lunch stop at the Bonjour Cafe in Siesta Key village provided a well deserved treat to provide energy for the return trip.
Pictured L to R are Kathy Light, Mary Gorman, Dawn Sumner, Chris Slater-Vohs, Sue Ostoin, Jean Bednar, Diane Santoianni, Monica Stathers, and Beth Groebe.

A few minutes later we spotted two dolphins fishing for their dinner! A luncheon at Duval's rounded off a perfect day.

"Love is in the Air" Tea - February 10th
“Love is in the Air” was the inspiration of co-chairs Jeana Hilligoss and Kathi Donnelly. “Red and Pink”, the symbols for “Heart Health and Breast Cancer Awareness” were integrated into the décor and message. Kathi and Jeana combined their love of community with jewelry. What could be better than to offer a “Dana Tyler Jewelry Fashion Show” and private sale? A “Table of Love, of course with over 70 prizes being given away before the event was done. Every guest was welcomed with champagne (courtesy of PPG&CC), and fans (courtesy of Dana Tyler). We enjoyed live music by the Speed Twins, who performed in the courtyard.

Nov. 16th Wine Tasting at Pelican Pointe Clubhouse PPWA Garden Club
Field Trip to Blalock Park On Wednesday, October 30th, members of the Garden Club were treated to a tour of Blalock Park - a labeled botanical display of trees and shrubs. We explored the metal art (a panther, a tarpon, a turtle and a manatee) as well as the butterfly garden and the many beautiful trees both native and imported. We saw Pat Cartwright's tree, which will be decorated for the holidays. We are now all educated and ready to bring the knowledge we gained home to our own gardens.
